This website is about my used car! Yes I am
Mark I
am going to suggest not trying this yourself, unless you have lots of
time and patience. Better yet, someone to help with the work. I was very disapointed when I bought my Rolls Silver Cloud II. It was a perfect picture on how not to design a car. I understand that the technology in 1955 to 1964 (the full run of this model) was not what it is today. But this was the most insane engineering I have seen in my life. A brake system that defies mortal thought. I think someone at Rolls Royce forgot that simple is better. Simple is one word that will never describe Rolls Royce Silver Clouds. So my idea was to build a restomod that would have great driveability and all the modern conviences (such as brakes) while keeping the appeal and look of the original car. I decided to use a 1982 Mercedes 300SD with 4 wheel independant suspension, 4 wheel disc brakes and a 5 cylinder 3.0 Litre turbo charged diesel engine as my donor car. The car had the same basic weight and wheel base width. Plus, I figure if I am building a Rolls Royce I want some quality engineering under the hood. And yes I did consider the standard Chevy 350 and mail order suspension which would have been much cheaper. But who wants a Rolls that drives like a chevy? So the first step was to disasemble the Mercedes. I chopped the body off and drove around what was left. It was still a great car to drive even in the condition shown below. Just goes to show you, it is hard to ruin a Mercedes. ![]() |
